Directional Signage to help you find Hinge.

We’ve been located within the same commercial office building for over 4 years now at 6 Northlands Road, Southampton and we’ve always had the same problem with our clients calling us to say they can’t find us, only to find out they’ve ended up at the wrong end of the road and driven straight past us! We’ll then wait on the road and wave our clients some sort of air traffic controller.

We’re in a shared building so we’ve spent allot of time over the last few years asking clients to look out for our neighbours signage, or signage for business that aren’t even in the building anymore. This was the only way for us to communicate our exact location, but it wasn’t fool proof as the current signage doesn’t really stand out either!

Just take a look at this before photo, you really wouldn’t know we were here, and rightly so!

Hinge, 6 Northlands Road, Southampton

As noted already, the building we’re in is shared with a number of other different business’ so it was important that we communicated our intentions to all the other key stakeholder in the building, we gave 3 options:

1) Brand the building so it becomes a name (think Basepoint, Regus etc) and a single point of reference.
2) Recreate all signage so it looks fresh, clean and current on the building.
3) We’d just look at our own signage if others didn’t have a need.

After months of back and forth with various business’ the consensus was that we were the only business who really invited clients into our own space and they didn’t share the same problem we had with visitor or were happy with the old signage they already had. So we ultimately pushed forward with our own signage.

We got straight to work using our network on signage suppliers who all came to see the building and helped assess our problem and make their own suggestions.

Proposal: Digging into the bushes and placing a sign roadside (left).

Proposal: Signage on the left hand side of the building.

After some thought we decided that signage on the left of the building wouldn’t work, most of our clients when visiting will likely travel down the Avenue so signage positioned on this side wouldn’t get seen until it’s too late – when they’ve driven past!

Although our building is on the left, our entrance is actually down the right hand side of the building, so our best option was the replace the two redundant signs that were already in-place.

We designed 3 signs, two that would be on the front of the building and another that would be next to the buzzer by our entrance.

Our new signage!

We hope you’ll agree that the new signage definitely stands out on the face of the building and the smaller sign to the right directs clients to our entrance to the side of the building.
